
A Georgia sheriff's deputy tragically lost his life in a head-on crash in Crawford County while answering the call of duty. Deputy Timothy Tavarus Rivers, aged 40, was in the midst of responding to assist another officer on Tuesday when the fatal accident occurred, as reported by FOX 5 Atlanta.
Rivers, while driving south of Lizella, veered across the center line and in an attempt to regain his path, collided head-on with an oncoming car, the Georgia State Patrol detailed the crash, which unfolded around 10 p.m. near Chapman Road; this incident has left another individual hospitalized with injuries, their name has not yet been disclosed, the patrol vehicle lost control while on the shoulder, Rivers made a steering correction unfortunately it led to the collision.
The officer was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead, leaving behind an indelible mark on the community he served. Rivers, who contested for sheriff in Bibb County in 2016 and resided in Macon-Bibb County, left an unblemished record during his 17-month tenure with the Crawford sheriff's office, having never received a complaint, "He came in and did his job well," Sheriff Lewis Walker expressed, mourning the loss of his deputy according to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
Rivers' untimely demise marks the third law enforcement officer in Georgia to fall in the line of duty this year, the Officers Down Memorial Page tracking such deaths puts the national toll at 11 officers so far this year, Deputy Rivers is also the third member of the Crawford sheriff's office to die while serving; in 2011 Deputy Samuel Smith suffered a fatal heart attack and in 1975 Allen Kay O'Neal was fatally shot, an ongoing investigation led by the Georgia State Patrol will continue to delve into the cause of the crash as the GBI Crime Lab is set to perform an autopsy to determine the precise cause of Rivers' death.
