An 81-year-old Georgia man stands accused of killing his wife with a hammer inside the retirement community they called home. Richard Hayden, who resided with his 71-year-old wife, Grace, at the Lindwood Estates Gracious Retirement Living in Lawrenceville, was arrested and charged with felony murder, malice murder, and aggravated assault.
According to the arrest warrant cited by FOX 5 Atlanta, Hayden allegedly attacked his wife by striking her multiple times in the head with a hammer—an assault that tragically ended her life. On Tuesday, Feb. 6, officers from Gwinnett County police were dispatched to the facility around 10 a.m. where they found Mrs. Hayden deceased in their shared room.
Cpl. Juan Madiedo with Gwinnett County police described the situation as a "domestic-related incident" in an interview with Miami Herald. Investigators were immediately called upon due to the suspicious circumstances surround the female's death. An account provided by Hayden was not immediately available and details leading up to the deadly assault remain scarce. The Miami Herald reports, referencing the arrest warrant, that the medical examiner’s office is tasked with determining an exact cause of death.
After the gruesome discovery, Richard Hayden was detained on-site. He was subsequently evaluated at a local hospital for reasons unrelated to the incident before being booked into Gwinnett County Jail, where he remained in custody a day later, as indicated by the Miami Herald. Information regarding a potential motive for the heinous act or what led up to it was not disclosed by the police. Lawrenceville, where the Linwood Estates is located, sits approximately 30 miles northeast of downtown Atlanta.
