German energy conglomerate RWE is charging up the Lone Star state with its latest clean energy endeavor—a battery storage and solar panel plant in Bastrop County, 'Big Star,' slated to go online this March. Touted as a boost for the Texas power grid, the 200-megawatt solar facility, backed by a beefy 80 megawatts of battery juice, is designed to inject stability into the system when the lights start to flicker.

Those megawatts come with a hefty price tag of progress, as the project is estimated to pad Bastrop County's coffers with a cool $30 million in taxes over its 30-year forecasted lifespan. The initiative was heralded in a Feb. 14 news release by the company, spelling out Big Star's role within the Electric Reliability Council of Texas market. If all goes according to plan, that energy infusion is coming just in time for the sweltering Texas summer.

But Big Star's not the solo act in RWE's Texan tour of power. Another notable project, Bright Arrow located in Sulphur Springs, is already cranking out watts since December 2023, paired with a 300-MWac of solar photovoltaic power, and looking to add more solar muscle come spring. These power plays are part of what RWE's boss Andrew Flanagan calls their "Growing Green Strategy." Flanagan sang the praises of battery storage as a linchpin for renewable energy deployment, stating, "Battery storage is growing even more critical to enable the rapid deployment of wind and solar projects, help stabilize the U.S. power grid and better ensure that enough electric supply is available to meet demand," in a statement obtained by Power magazine.

Not to be overshadowed, a third project sits under the Arizona sun in Maricopa County, ready to bask in its light later this month. Will these new kids on the block stand toe-to-toe with the likes of RWE's mammoth 137-MWac battery at the Fifth Standard complex in Fresno? That remains to be seen, but they're starting to signal RWE's ambitious goal to inflate its battery storage business to an electrifying 6 GW by 2030.
