A man accused in the fatal crash that claimed the life of a Georgia State Patrol trooper was denied bond over the weekend. Gerson Rodriguez, facing a litany of charges including felony murder, appeared in Gwinnett County magistrate's court following his arrest on Feb. 2. The tragedy unfolded on January 28, when Trooper Jimmy Cenescar was attempting to pull over a motorcycle for a traffic violation on Interstate 85 and was killed after his patrol car veered off the road and hit an embankment, as reported by FOX 5 Atlanta.
Details provided by WSB-TV state that Rodriguez, also known as Gerson Ayala Rodriguez, is additionally charged with first-degree vehicular homicide, felony fleeing, and tampering with evidence. Emergency responders attempted life-saving measures on Cenescar before he was taken to Northside Gwinnett Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries. Rodriguez was apprehended in Norcross and, is currently being held at the Gwinnett County Jail.
Remembered for his service, Trooper Cenescar had been with the Georgia Department of Public Safety since January 2023 after graduating from the 114th Trooper School. His law enforcement career includes a tenure with the Atlanta Police Department before he served as a trooper, where in October 2021, he saved a man's life after a dramatic car crash. Visitation will be held from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 8, at the Crowell Brothers Funeral Home, and the funeral service is scheduled for 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 9, at Mount Paran Church, says WSB-TV. The interment will take place immediately after the service at Mount Harmony Memorial Gardens.
