A Houston man has been slapped with charges after a fatal hit-and-run incident that claimed the life of a 65-year-old woman. Nicolas Lopez Martinez, 50, is facing a count of failure to stop and render aid after police said he struck Georgia Salas on Tuesday evening and then sped off.
Lopez Martinez, who was reportedly behind the wheel of a silver Nissan Rogue, is accused to have quickly fled after hitting Salas, who was walking on a sidewalk at 7200 Lyons Avenue. According to the City of Houston's official news release, the crash occurred at about 6:05 p.m.
The Houston Police Department's Vehicular Crimes Division, including Sergeant L. Le and Officers M. Alanis and Z. Radcliffe, responded to the accident. "Ms. Salas was walking on the sidewalk at the above address when she was struck by a silver Nissan Rogue leaving a private parking lot," HPD stated. After officers managed to track down and arrest Lopez Martinez, emergency responders rushed Salas to a nearby hospital where she was sadly declared dead.
Following his capture, Lopez Martinez was questioned, booked into the Harris County Jail, and is to presently await trial. The investigation is ongoing and officials pointed out that additional charges are possible, depending on the findings. The final determination of charges will be made by the 248th District State Court, where Lopez Martinez will be obliged to answer to his grievous actions.
