A Tuesday inferno torched three snow plows and damaged several other vehicles at the Hudson Department of Public Works (DPW) garage, according to officials. Emergency responders, summoned around 5 p.m. to 1 Municipal Drive, were greeted by plumes of heavy smoke emanating from the site, as detailed by WHDH.
The fire brigade found upon their arrival a scene of destruction; three large snow plows were ablaze, alongside three other DPW vehicles caught in the fiery grasp. Hudson Fire Chief Jamie Desautels and Police Chief Richard DiPersio reported no individuals were present during the incident, and fortunately, there were no reported injuries. A sanding truck parked within the garage is believed to have sparked the conflagration, however, the cause does not seem suspicious.
Meanwhile, the building incurred significant damage and is currently out of operation, posing challenges to the department's ability to manage winter weather conditions. WHDH's report highlighted the assistance from neighboring departments, including Marlborough, Northborough, Stow, and Sudbury, while Berlin and Clinton covered Hudson's stations in solidarity.
"We are grateful to all first responders who came to the scene and assisted in fighting the fire," Eric Ryder, Hudson DPW director expressed his gratitude, in a statement obtained by Boston25News. "Quick action by all made sure that the fire did not damage more equipment." Despite the quick response, the loss of vital snow removal equipment could pose significant hurdles for the town, especially with winter still holding its grip.
The overall impact on the town's services, especially with regards to snow removal capabilities, remains to be evaluated. The fire's aftermath leaves a stark reminder of the fragility of essential municipal services in the face of unforeseen disasters. Both WHDH and Boston25News have indicated that investigations are ongoing to ascertain the definitive cause of the fire.
