Shilling's distress was echoed through a horrific phone call from a fellow inmate, claiming that "Brandon was bleeding out, had been stabbed, and needed help." In a harrowing account, She revealed, "He wasn’t responding. It took about an hour for them to get his body, the other inmate said." Prior to this fatal incident, Shilling had informed the prison staff about the threats her fiancé was receiving, urging them to place him in protective custody, a plea that went unheeded, as stated in emails obtained by FOX 5.
The prison has been plagued with a reputation for violence, having been previously spotlighted by a Department of Justice investigation into allegations of civil rights abuses. Last month, an inmate-recorded video showed, an attack on another prisoner where no guard intervened, a scene reported by FOX 5's Eric Mock. Burrell's sentence stemmed from violations of the Street Gang Terrorism Act and was set to end in 2033, the jail spokesperson disclosed to AOL News. "I know Brandon committed crimes and deserved to be punished," Perez said, "But, the punishment does not fit the crime."
