An Irvine man faces up to 21 years behind bars after pleading guilty to a firebombing attack on a Planned Parenthood clinic and conspiring to hit an electrical substation, in what authorities have called an alarming campaign of terror based on a hateful ideology, the U.S. Attorney's Office said. Tibet Ergul, 22, entered a guilty plea to conspiracy to damage an energy facility and a misdemeanor related to intentional damage to a reproductive health services facility, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office, Central District of California.

The indictment details Ergul's sinister intentions where he and co-conspirator Chance Brannon, a 24-year-old Marine from San Juan Capistrano, schemed to throw a Molotov cocktail at the clinic in March 2022 they even dressed in dark clothing and disguise to carry out the attack, which forced the facility to reschedule some 30 appointments after damaging the entrance. Ergul did not stop at the Planned Parenthood arson attempt, he was also prepping for a large-scale assault on the county's power infrastructure and even considered a strike on Dodger Stadium during an LGBTQ pride event, authorities uncovered as they pieced together Ergul's intricate web of plots which fell apart when law enforcement moved in just days before their target date.

United States Attorney Martin Estrada highlighted the grim reality of the defendant's path, stating, "The breadth of his and his co-conspirators' violent plans is chilling." In response to these events, FBI's Acting Assistant Director in Charge Amir Ehsaei underscored the severity of using violence to promote ideologies, emphasizing that Ergul's actions not only endangered lives but also betrayed a fundamental disregard for the community's safety and values, as he put it, "Using terroristic violence to further an ideology is a serious crime with severe consequences." Ergul and Brannon also plotted an attack aimed at Orange County's power grid and exchanged messages hinting at a race war, indicating a depth of malice and preparation that has rattled the local community, as per the U.S. Attorney's Office, Central District of California.

Ergul is slated to receive his sentence on May 30, under a plea agreement proposing a prison term between five and six-and-a-half years. Brannon awaits his sentencing on April 15, while Batten is scheduled for May 15. The Costa Mesa Police and Fire Departments were also commended for their extensive support in investigation, a collaborative effort hailed as a stark warning to those driven by ideologies rooted in hate and intolerance, poised to commit acts of terror against their fellow Americans, and shadowing the access to critical health services.
