Shawn "Jay-Z" Carter, using the platform of his Grammy acceptance speech for the Dr. Dre Global Impact Award, openly criticized the Recording Academy over historical snubs, including those against his wife, Beyoncé, USA Today reported. Joined by his daughter Blue Ivy, he spotlighted the paradox of Beyoncé's record-breaking Grammy wins that omit the coveted album of the year accolade.
The mogul reflected on past boycotts of the awards show bringing into conversation his own boycott in 1998 when he stood in solidarity with DMX and his similar grievances, Atlanta News First detailed how Jay-Z condemned the historical oversight at the ceremony stating, "And then they went to a hotel and watched the Grammys," referencing Will Smith and DJ Jazzy Jeff's approach to protest in 1989, adding, "I ain’t even understand… it wasn’t a great boycott." Despite the progress the industry has supposedly made since then, Jay-Z underscored a looming discrepancy, “I don’t want to embarrass this young lady, but she has more Grammys than anyone and never won album of the year,” he said of Beyoncé.
Beyoncé's supporters have long voiced their criticisms regarding her repeated exclusion from winning the Album of the Year recognition despite her extensive collection of awards. Jay-Z challenged the audience and the Recording Academy, saying, "We love y’all, we love ya’ll, we love y'all and we want y’all to get it right," as reported by Atlanta News First.
Jay-Z's speech took an earnest turn while unpacking the subjective nature of the awards, insinuating that the industry's recognition process was not without its flaws, "Think about that, most Grammys, never won album of the year," as he addressed the crowd, not only did he note the shortfalls in award distributions but he layered his remarks with an encouragement to persevere, "Just in life, you got to keep showing up until they give you all those accolades you think you deserve," according to Atlanta News First.
