In a unanimous decision, the City of Kyle's Parks and Recreation Department is pushing forward a plan to equip the city's parks with naloxone, a potent antidote for opioid overdoses, including those from increasingly prevalent drugs like fentanyl. As reported by CBS Austin, the motion to place naloxone boxes in public parks was made Monday night, aiming to curb the alarming overdose rates.

The deployment of naloxone, widely recognized by the brand name Narcan, is a move anticipated to save lives amidst a climbing number of opioid-related casualties. The recommendation precedes the final decision by the Kyle City Council, which will deliberate on the proposal in an upcoming meeting. According to MySA, in August of 2023, Texas recorded at least 3,109 deaths linked to these overdoses, drawing near an all-time high.

Central to this life-saving effort is the involvement of the Forever 15 Project, an organization born out of personal tragedy after its founders lost their son to a fatal fentanyl overdose. The Forever 15 Project will be in charge of stocking the boxes in Kyle Parks, ensuring constant availability of the drug to the public. "In the community, poisonings are still happening. deaths are still occurring," co-founder Janel Rodriguez told MySA while emphasizing the importance of accessibility to naloxone.

Rodriguez has a vision beyond Kyle, calling on neighboring areas like Buda, Dripping Springs, Wimberley, and San Marcos to adopt similar measures. She pointed out the unpredictability of overdoses, implying the necessity of having naloxone readily available in a variety of public spaces. "You just never know, you could be at your local theater or grocery store, even at church," Rodriguez asserted in her interview with MySA.

Naloxone is typically administered through a nasal spray or muscle injection and can be used safely by anyone, opioid user or not. The boxes planned for the Kyle parks are set to include the nasal spray form accompanied by usage instructions. Rodriguez also expressed a desire to include fentanyl testing strips in the future, though this part of the plan remains uncertain as of Thursday, February 1, as she detailed to MySA.
