An off-duty cop turned his home into a shooting range just days before Valentine's when his gun went off unintentionally, authorities said Thursday. The unnamed Police Officer, who is assigned to the Northeast Division, accidentally discharged his weapon late Tuesday night while inside his residence, the Los Angeles Police Department reported.
While getting his handgun ready for a training session, the officer, around 11:50 PM, inadvertently fired a bullet that busted through his bathroom wall and lodged itself in the exterior of his home. According to the LAPD Newsroom, luckily, no one was reported injured due to this slip-up.
The Force Investigation Division (FID) detectives are looking into the blunder. They were on-site following the mishap, which has left the department red-faced as they scramble to assess the damage and prevent future occurrences.
"The round penetrated the exterior wall of the residence and came to rest outside," the Department detailed, in a statement imbued with the cold sterility of protocol. The incident has stirred up questions regarding weapon safety and handling by law enforcement even within the confines of their own homes. A probe into the matter by FID aims to illuminate this shadowy misstep.
