A man was killed in a grisly encounter with a freight train on Houston's south side, authorities reported Wednesday.
Police say the accident occurred around 4:45 p.m. Tuesday when a Chevrolet Equinox, attempting to quickly exit the driveway of a business at 13100 Almeda Road, failed to yield the right of way to an oncoming Union Pacific train on the tracks. The northbound train collided with the SUV, killing its driver, a 36-year-old man whose name has yet to be officially released, pending the verification of his identity by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences, according to a statement obtained by the City of Houston news outlet.
The Houston Police Department's Vehicular Crimes Division, including Sergeant L. Le and Officer S. Le, is investigating the incidents that led to the fatal collision. The Houston Fire Department paramedics pronounced the driver deceased at the scene.
Details about what may have caused the driver to unknowingly cross in front of the moving train have not been disclosed. A full investigation into the circumstances surrounding the accident remains ongoing.
