A fatal night-time collision took the life of a man on a scooter yesterday evening on the west side of San Antonio, according to police. In an incident that spotlights the dangers of poorly lit vehicles and streets, the scooter-rider was struck by a truck driver who told authorities he failed to see the man until it was too late.
The San Antonio Police Department responded to the scene at the 9500 block of West Commerce Street near Callaghan Road around 9:23 p.m., following reports of the tragic event. Upon arrival, officers declared the 42-year-old man deceased, KENS 5 reported.
Investigators found that the victim had been traveling eastbound in a traffic lane on West Commerce Street at the time of the accident. The electric motorized scooter he was riding was not adequately equipped with lighting for the dim conditions and he was dressed in dark clothing—a combination which may have contributed to the driver's late recognition of the man's presence on the road. There was no shoulder on this part of the road, adding to the potential hazards for both scooter riders and drivers alike.
The fatal contact occurred when a man driving a GMC truck, moving in the same direction, hit the scooter-rider with the front right side of the vehicle. The driver, who has not been publicly identified, stated that the darkness and scarce lighting made it impossible to see the man on time, police say. As this story continues to develop, there is currently no update on whether charges will be filed against the driver involved in the accident.
