Man Sentenced to Over 21 Years for Attempting to Smuggle $810K Worth of Liquid Meth Across U.S.-Mexico Border

A 54-year-old man has been slapped with a hefty 255-month federal prison sentence for trying to smuggle a truckload of liquid methamphetamine across the U.S.-Mexico border, as announced by U.S. Attorney Alamdar S. Hamdani. Dual citizen Manuel Ignacio Ley Villa, residing in Mexico, was caught in the act last April at the Hidalgo port of entry when his ride, a Chrysler Pacifica, raised eyebrows due to a suspiciously nervous demeanor.

Under the scrutinizing eyes of law enforcement, Ley Villa's Pacifica was flagged for a second look. An X-ray scan of the maroon family cruiser revealed oddities lurking in the depths of its fuel tank — a treasure chest of illegal substance. In a twist fit for a crime drama, the liquid exposed to air inside the tank crystallized before agents' very eyes, solidifying the damning evidence against Ley Villa, as reported by the U.S. Department of Justice.

The nearly 91 pounds of drug, weighing in at about 41.14 kilograms with a street value of $810,000, would not be peddled on U.S. streets, but instead become the tickets to Ley Villa's long-term residency behind bars. The sentencing, delivered by U.S. District Judge Micaela Alvarez, comes after Ley Villa pleaded guilty to the charges on November 28, 2023. His prior convictions for similar offenses weighed in during sentencing, tipping the scales toward a lengthy incarceration.

Ley Villa now faces over two decades in prison, with his future closely monitored through five years of supervised release after serving his time. The convict will be making himself at home in one of the U.S. Bureau of Prisons facilities, which will be selected to accommodate his extended stay
