Adam Montgomery has been convicted of the murder of his five-year-old daughter, Harmony, in a grisly case that has captured the public's attention. The jury in Manchester, New Hampshire found him guilty earlier today, and he was convicted on all five charges he faced, which included second-degree murder, second-degree assault, falsifying physical evidence, abusing his daughter's corpse, and witness tampering, specifically with his efforts to control his estranged wife, Kayla Montgomery, who testified as the prosecution's chief witness, as The Boston Globe reports.
According to Boston 25 News, during the trial’s closing arguments, the prosecution described Montgomery's brutal treatment of his daughter, saying he assaulted her because she had bathroom accidents inside the car they were living in after an eviction. Prosecutor Benjamin Agati said Montgomery punched her in the head until she died. "All he has is his car, and his rage, and his fists," Agati told jurors. He also stressed that Harmony "doesn't get to be at peace in death" because her father refuses to reveal where her body is.
Despite never finding Harmony's body, the evidence presented at trial detailed the shifting of the young girl's remains from one hiding spot to another, including a car trunk, a cooler, a ceiling vent, and a workplace freezer. Harmony was first reported missing in December 2021, although investigators believe her murder occurred in December 2019. This drawn-out gap between the crime and its reporting only added to the horrific nature of the case.
Kayla Montgomery, serving a separate 18-month sentence for perjury related to the case, took the stand during the trial and gave a harrowing testimony about the abuse Harmony suffered. She claimed that Adam repeatedly punched Harmony in the head because the girl had wet herself and spoke about various locations where Adam hid the body. Furthermore, she revealed Adam began abusing her with punches, giving her a black eyes when he suspected she might contact the authorities. Meanwhile, defense attorneys suggested that Kayla herself was complicit and influential in the events leading to Harmony's death, but ultimately, the jury sided with the prosecution's narrative of a father's fatal abuse towards his daughter, and the manipulation of his wife to cover it up.
The case has cast a somber shadow over Manchester and raised serious questions about domestic violence and child protection services. Adam Montgomery, already serving a 30-year sentence for an unrelated gun conviction, will now face the legal consequences for the death of his daughter, a tragic end to a young life that has profoundly affected the community.
