Maricopa region's fight against homelessness received a significant financial boost with a combined sum of over $80 million in federal funding allocated to local programs, announced on Monday. According to a report by 12news.com, the Maricopa Association of Governments revealed that $46.5 million will be directed towards enhancing the social services that assist individuals and families without homes. Simultaneously, as detailed in a release by the Maricopa Association of Governments, another $36.3 million grant is intended to strengthen the housing lifeline for those stranded in the cycle of homelessness.

The recent Point-in-Time Homelessness Count, which is set to publish its findings in late April, underscored the persistent issue, as it uncovered thousands still braving life without shelter in the region. Rachel Milne, co-chair of the Maricopa Continuum of Care, expressed optimism, stating to 12news.com, “The award represents a nearly 30% increase from previous years, which will mean additional housing and services for people experiencing homelessness in the Maricopa region,”

With 33 programs earmarked for the federal grant, officials anticipate that the funding will address some of the core challenges in combating homelessness. Vicki Phillips, chair of the Maricopa Regional Continuum of Care Board, highlighted to azmag.gov, "Housing is one of the key components to ending homelessness. This money will go a long way toward helping people find housing situations that are affordable, stable, and permanent."

Funding subdivision includes significant allotments with $855,158 allocated for the Coordinated Entry project, helping prioritize and place individuals and families into suitable housing, and $620,921 earmarked for the Homeless Management Information System, which effectively tracks services provided to the homeless. Stressed by the Maricopa Continuum of Care, the federal dollars are also aimed to reinforce the Continuum of Care planning—a critical aspect of the homelessness strategy.
