DETROIT — In a notable shuffle within Detroit's nonprofit sector, Midtown Detroit Inc. has taken on Maureen Stapleton as its new interim executive director, the organization declared on Thursday. Taking the reins on March 1, Stapleton fills the shoes left by Sue Mosey, who retired at the end of last year after a notable three-decade tenure.
Stapleton steps into the role with a vision to revitalize Midtown, infusing it with economic and cultural vitality, a mission that harks back to her days as a Democratic state representative of the district. While engaging the community in her first two months, she aims to develop a new strategic plan that focuses on fostering inclusive growth and sustaining the small business sector, essential to Midtown's identity. Stapleton told The Detroit Free Press, "My goal is to do two things: continue to move those things in the pipeline forward and find new opportunities for development — both housing and retail — so that Midtown continues to be a place where people live, work, shop and play."
Midtown Detroit Inc., key in the city's community and economic development, manages various arts and special events, including DELECTRICITY and Noel Night. Responsible for organizing, Midtown Detroit Inc. has been pivotal to the area's transformation, something which Stapleton is anticipated to take even further. In her statement obtained by PR Newswire, Stapleton said, "Together, we will cultivate a Midtown that thrives and serves as a beacon of innovation and opportunity for all."
Ned Staebler, Midtown Detroit Inc.'s board chair, enunciated Maureen's qualifications, speaking to her vast experience in buttressing organizations and spearheading community projects. "Her deep roots in our Midtown and New Center Detroit communities make her ideally suited to guide this organization," he asserted in a comment reported by The Detroit News. Her prior work includes leadership roles aimed at reducing infant mortality and enhancing technological infrastructure in urban spaces.
Stapleton's career trajectory includes her work with the Detroit Public Lighting Authority and an executive role in Columbus, Ohio, aimed at tackling infant mortality. Her comprehensive background in governmental roles couples with her academic credentials, holding a master's degree in organizational development from Bowling Green State University, which prepares her for charting the course of Midtown Detroit Inc. to new horizons.
