Last Friday night, vigilant Minneapolis police officers, as part of the Late-Night Safety Plan, thwarted what could have potentially been another deadly shooting in Downtown. Thanks to their extensive surveillance of Downtown parking lots, particularly keen on guns left in cars by those frequenting bars and nightclubs, they noticed suspicious activity which led to the intervention.
Officers were monitoring the network of cameras when they observed two individuals stowing firearms in a vehicle and another concealing an unknown item. The quick-acting officers were then able swiftly to alert their ground counterparts. The response was prompt; one man, illegally armed due to a prohibition on his gun ownership, was nabbed in a club queue and subsequently jailed. Another adult and a juvenile, the latter already on probation for second-degree assault with a deadly weapon, was caught leaving the venue. The juvenile was apprehended and booked into the Hennepin County Juvenile Detention Center, while the adult was identified and released, as per the Minneapolis Police Department’s Facebook page.
The search of the vehicle resulted in the recovery of three handguns, including two equipped with extended magazines. One of these firearms was further modified with an illegal auto sear, effectively converting it into an automatic weapon. According to the police, this type of seizing of potentially deadly weapons is part of an ongoing effort to curb gun violence, a serious issue within the city.
In the last year alone, the Minneapolis Police Department has confiscated 1,082 guns, with a significant portion, nearly one-fourth, found in the vicinity of downtown. “The hard work of our officers is keeping Minneapolis safe,” the department stated. The prevention of another violent incident downtown underscores the critical nature and often unseen labor involved in night-time policing to ensure public safety.
