A 10-year-old boy who vanished from his North Texas neighborhood triggered a major search and an Amber Alert but was found safe, authorities said.
The youngster had disappeared after leaving an apartment complex in Little Elm, a town north of Dallas. According to WFAA, an Amber Alert was broadcast, and the police initiated an overnight manhunt. In consideration of his age, WFAA has refrained from releasing the name of the child.
The search for the missing child came to an end when a resident, Henry Smith, recognized him from the alert. "He was just walking in by himself and I had the Amber Alert already pulled up. It matched the description. So I went in there and asked him to make sure it was him," Smith recounted in a FOX 4 interview. The boy confirmed his identity and appeared unharmed.
Upon reunion with his family, the relief was palpable, and captured on Fox 4's cameras. Smith detailed how swiftly law enforcement arrived once he had made the call, "I told him, ‘You know everybody’s looking for you, right?' And he said no. So that's when I contacted the authorities," he said. Little Elm Police Department has not commented on the circumstances of the boy's disappearance but confirmed his safety.
The community breathed a collective sigh as the worrisome event resolved with the missing child back home. The effectiveness of the Amber Alert system was once again demonstrated, in no small part thanks to the vigilance and quick action of citizens like Smith.
