In a long-awaited break in a heart-wrenching case, a Mississippi man has been arrested for his alleged role in a fatal hit-and-run that claimed the life of Arlington police veteran Darrin McMichael, authorities say.
Twenty-six-year-old Quintairo Watson faces charges relating to the September 2023 crash that occurred on I-20 in Dallas County, taking the life of Officer McMichael, a 24-year member of the Arlington Police Department, FOX 4 News reported. The tragedy unfolded as traffic suddenly slowed, causing McMichael to bump into the vehicle ahead, subsequently, he fell from his police motorcycle, and an SUV, purportedly driven by Watson, struck him and fled the scene, with the harrowing incident witnessed by McMichael's wife who was following in a separate car.
The Dallas County Sheriff’s Office and Arlington PD's persistent detectives, committed to never letting the case grow cold, culminated in the arrest by the U.S. Marshals Task Force after Watson was pegged as the suspect, with cell tower data and testimony from a parolee contributing to the breakthrough. Watson, hailing from Jackson, Mississippi, is reportedly being held on a $100,000 bond.
"It was a never-ending thing for the investigators, this was never going to be a cold case for them," Dallas County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Doug Sisk told FOX 4, adding, "There’s an arrest made due to the diligence and the tenacity of the detectives to bring a close to the end of this case." The Dallas Morning News revealed that McMichael's contributions as an officer were deeply mourned in the community, as hundreds attended his funeral to pay their respects, and a poignant letter by his wife, Lynette, was read aloud, touching on the profound love they shared during their four years of marriage.
The Arlington Police Department expressed profound relief and gratitude upon Watson's arrest, stating in a release, "The death of Officer Darrin McMichael has left a permanent hole in the collective heart of our Arlington PD family. But today’s news lifts a tremendous weight off of the entire department." The statement, which reflects the solidarity and continued resilience of the department, was obtained by The Dallas Morning News, paying homage to the investigative team's resolve in pursuing justice for their fallen comrade as the case moves forward.
