
A veteran Montgomery County deputy was tragically killed in a car accident in Centerville, Texas, while transporting an inmate, officials reported. As per the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office, Deputy Charles Rivette passed away in the line of duty due to the collision that happened on Wednesday. Another deputy, James Francis, and the inmate, who has not been named, sustained serious injuries during the incident, reports FOX 26 Houston.
The crash occurred approximately 80 miles away from the sheriff's office, north of Huntsville. Rivette had reportedly served the sheriff's office for 18 years, according to KPRC 2. The exact cause of the collision is currently under investigation. The somber mood extended among law enforcement officers, with KPRC 2's Brittany Jeffers reporting that Rivette's colleagues are feeling the weight of his abrupt departure.
In a statement obtained by FOX 26 Houston, Sheriff Henderson expressed "profound sorrow" and extended "condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of Deputy Rivette." The statement further narrates that "The entire MCSO family is hurting from this loss and stands together in mourning the passing of Deputy Rivette."
While details surrounding the cause of the crash involving the deputies and the inmate were sparse, Texas Department of Public Safety has taken the lead on the investigation.
