Tragedy narrowly averted in Moreno Valley yesterday as three juveniles, ages estimated between 11 and 13, were wrestled from the grips of a treacherous drainage canal thanks to the swift action of local authorities. According to a report by the Riverside County Sheriff's Department, the young trio was out of their depth in a fast-moving storm drain when deputies made the high-stakes save near Indian Street and Dracaena Avenue.
It all unfolded at around 4:21 p.m. when several 9-1-1 calls poured in to alert law enforcement to the fact that the children had been haphazardly swept into the canal's churning waters. Two of the juveniles managed to extricate themselves from their perilous situation but the third was carried further downstream, left to desperately cling to a wedge platform beneath a canal roadway bridge. Officials said two deputies had to quickly scale a chain-link fence and lower themselves onto the platform to hold on to the juvenile, in a fraught wait for backup.
Facing the wrath of Mother Nature, the rescue unit, which included the Cal Fire Swift Water Rescue Team and a Riverside County Sheriff's Office helicopter, executed a precision extraction to retrieve the juvenile and both deputies. Per updates, all three kids were taken to a local hospital as a precautionary measure with expectations set on a full recovery.
In response to this heart-stopping incident, the Moreno Valley Station has issued a stark warning about the latent dangers present in these storm surges. They've underscored the importance for parents to educate their kids on the deceiving power of swift-moving water — which might look inviting for play or a swim but can, in reality, readily drag one to harm or worse. If there's any info about this incident, Deputy Jimmy Leanos at Moreno Valley Station can be contacted at (951) 486-6700.
An account of the incident is available for public review in the press release from the Riverside County Sheriff's Department, documenting the detailed rescue operation and further warnings about the forceful storm drains that ensnared the youths. The story stands as a sobering reminder of nature's unpredictable force and the ever-present danger lurking in our community's backyard.
