Williamson County has thrown a lifeline to struggling teens with the grand opening of the Maple Unit, a new inpatient behavioral health wing at Rock Springs Hospital. As reported by KXAN, the unit provides 24 beds specifically for adolescents aged 13 to 17 grappling with mental health challenges. The county has seen a staggering increase in emergency room visits by teens for behavioral issues, a trend underscored by a recent Texas Children’s study mentioned by Rock Springs CEO Erin Basalay during an interview with KXAN News at Noon. The study found an 800-percent climb in such visits over a few years.
Rock Springs, which has been operating at capacity since its opening in 2014, hopes to significantly accommodate the surge in demand for these critical services. The expansion has not only doubled the adolescent capacity but also freed up beds for adult patients, raising the facility's total to 96 beds. "We've been at capacity for the majority of the time we've been in operation," Basalay told Community Impact. With a nod to the $10 million price tag, she expressed hope "that we'll be able to reach more people."
The new wing represents a collaborative effort by Rock Springs, Williamson County, and Bluebonnet Trails Community Services to address the increasing mental health care needs following the coronavirus pandemic. Basalay emphasized the importance of early intervention and compassionate care, suggesting that such approaches can prevent lifelong mental illnesses and substance abuse issues. This sentiment was echoed by Precinct 3 Commissioner Valerie Covey, who delineated the role of Williamson County's Behavioral Health Task Force in spearheading this partnership.
Access to vital mental health services at Rock Springs is not limited to Williamson County residents. Basalay emphasized that everyone is welcome, stating to KXAN that families should "hopefully start to have proactive conversations about how they're feeling and what’s going on and who their support system can be." This inclusive approach aims to open the door wider for teens and families seeking refuge and support amidst a growing crisis in adolescent mental health.
