New Bedford has dealt yet another blow to its local narcotics scene following a raid that took a significant amount of drugs off the streets. Detectives, concluding an investigation on a cocaine distribution operation, descended upon 263 Phillips Ave., apartment 3, and placed 35-year-old Jarrod Alves in cuffs this past Saturday. In a statement obtained by New Bedford Police Department on Facebook, Detective Jonathan Miranda was identified as the lead investigator targeting Alves in this operation.
During the execution of the search warrant, over 157 grams of cocaine and 80 grams of fentanyl were found, among other controlled substances, including Xanax, Ecstasy, and mushrooms, in Alves's possession. The apartment search turned up more than illegal drugs, with digital scales and packaging materials being seized, which are indicative of a local drug trade's operational tools. Detectives also confiscated over $2,400 in cash, believed to be proceeds from illicit drug activity.
Snagged in the raid, Alves now faces a slew of charges. He's been charged with trafficking in cocaine, trafficking in fentanyl, and possession with intent to distribute classes A, B, C, D, and E. It's not his first run-in with the law; back in 2014, Alves was previously convicted of possession with intent to distribute class A substances. Given his record, this subsequent offense could spell even stiffer penalties for the 35-year-old, who was also on probation out of Bristol Superior Court at the time of his arrest.
Alves's rap sheet is a diverse one, with convictions that span a spectrum of charges, from firearm offenses to assault with a dangerous weapon, not to mention resisting arrest, and assault and battery on a police officer. In light of his history, police are urging anyone with information about crime to step forward.
