New Mexico is poised to follow in the footsteps of its West Coast neighbors as its legislature approves a bill targeting a reduction in emissions from transportation fuels, a move backed by Democratic Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham, aimed at slashing carbon intensity by 20% by 2030, and further to 30% by 2040, according to KESQ.
The policy, passed by the Senate on a 26-15 vote, leverages financial incentives to drive the production of cleaner-burning fuels, states the U.S. News & World Report.
Despite the bill's promising environmental intentions, opposition rests heavily on the shoulders of Republicans worried about fuel prices, with Senator Greg Nibert airing concerns about the bill's impact on consumers, especially the financially marginalized, a sentiment he shared during the Senate floor debate while others called out this view as fearmongering, as per The Seattle Times.
