A Coweta County school experienced a lockdown after a student reported seeing an individual with a gun, leading to a massive police response, officials say. The Central Educational Center, situated on the 100 block of Martin Luther King Jr. Drive in Newnan, a charter career academy for Coweta County high school students, was swept by law enforcement after the report was made around noon. Atlanta News First reported that students witnessed someone with what appeared to be a gun in a hallway sparking the alert.
However, the situation turned out to be a false alarm after a "toy gun," specifically a decorative key chain accessory was discovered during the investigation, a detail not immediately made clear when the lockdown protocols were initiated the students and staff were in 'code red' for what turned out to be an innocuous item. The scare was deemed an "honest mistake" and as of now, the student who had the toy gun isn’t facing any disciplinary actions, according to officials quoted in Fox 5 Atlanta.
The precautionary lockdown was swiftly enacted by the school district following the student’s report to the school resource officer, which then prompted a rapid response from multiple law enforcement agencies, who combed the school ensuring safety. Though the school was placed on lockdown and the stress and fear were palpable the authorities later confirmed that there was "no threat", and explicitly stated that there never was a gun on campus nor was there an ever an active shooter situation in play.
After the all clear was given, the Central Education Center returned to normal activities, lifting the lockdown that had put parents, students, and staff on edge.
