In a major crackdown on organized retail theft, detectives from the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department (LASD) nabbed over $5 million worth of stolen goods, including a horde of 58” Hisense flat-screen TVs and a variety of consumer merchandise; in a series of raids that bring to the forefront the ongoing battle against sophisticated heists targeting the retail sector. According to LASD's official Facebook page, the operation was led by their Major Crimes Bureau Organized Retail Crime and Cargo Theft Task Force (ORCTF), and it kicked off after the theft of the TVs from the City of Commerce was reported.
The investigation that ensued quickly pinpointed a location in San Bernardino where a search warrant was served in the 3400 block of North Cajon Boulevard, leading to the recovery of not just the televisions estimated at $70,000 but a range of high-demand items that included Scotts grass fertilizer, Yamaha home theater systems, and government-issued Navy recruit training shorts, among others, energy drinks, Unifi computer chips and various housekeeping products such as Arm & Hammer products and CO2 Coconut Water was part of the extensive haul as well. The impressive bust highlights the LASD's dedicated efforts to rein in the burgeoning threat of organized retail crime which has seen an uptick in recent times.
Despite the significant recovery, the LASD stated that the investigation remains active with no further details released at this time. They have also encouraged anyone with information to reach out either directly through [email protected] or by phone at 562-946-7270, and for those wishing to remain anonymous, the option to call "L.A. Crime Stoppers" at 800-222-TIPS (8477) is available.
With this latest seizure of stolen merchandise, LASD's ORCTF, along with the Cargo Theft Task Force, shines a spotlight on the emerging patterns of retail theft that law enforcement is increasingly combating. Formed in September 2023, the task force is an initiative designed to specifically address the wave of organized retail crimes, comprising three regional teams including the Burglary and Robbery Task Force (BRTF) and the Cargo Cats team, the LASD works in partnership with other agencies, both local and federal to spearhead these efforts and put the clamps on what is a growing concern for retailers and the wider business community.
