The Minnesota Golden Gophers clawed their way to victory over the Rutgers Scarlet Knights with a solid 81-70 win on Sunday. The Gopher's shining star, Pharrel Payne, dropped 21 points and snagged 11 rebounds, cementing him as a key player in the night's triumph.
With a burst of energy starting the second half, Minnesota sunk 7 of 10 shots, including a duo of 3-pointers from Cam Christie and Elijah Hawkins, pushing ahead to a 56-44 lead early on. The Gophers expanded their lead further as Hawkins drained another 3-pointer followed closely by Dawson Garcia, bringing the score to a comfortable 72-55 lead, per CBS News Minnesota.
Rutgers, on the other hand, struggled initially in the second half, only making 4 of 22 shots. Nevertheless, they mounted a late-game surge cutting the deficit down to six in an 11-0 run, with major contributions from Derek Simpson, who put up seven points, and Austin Williams, adding four, as noted by CBS News Minnesota.
Mike Mitchell Jr., not wanting to see the game slip away, was perfect on the line, hitting 4-for-4 from the stripe in the dying minute. The collective effort saw the Gophers complete 15 of 19 free throws in the latter half, ending the game 23 of 34 from the line. "Mike Mitchell Jr. then went 4-for-4 from the free-throw line in the final minute to wrap it up for Minnesota," highlighted the Press of Atlantic City, reflecting on his crucial role in sealing the win.
The combined efforts of the Gophers led to a balanced offensive display with contributions across the board. Hawkins delivered with 16 points, Garcia added 14 points to mix alongside eight rebounds, while Mitchell finished with a solid 12 points. Cam Christie didn't fall behind, chalking up 10 points, and putting a dent in Rutgers' defense.
The Scarlet Knights, who saw their four-game winning streak snapped, were not without their standout performers. Simpson and Clifford Omoruyi each bagged 19 points, painting the scoreboard despite the loss. The team went on to shoot 38.7% for the night and made good on their free throws, hitting 18 out of 22 as reported by the Press of Atlantic City.
Looking ahead, the schedule doesn't get any easier for either team. Minnesota is prepping for a skirmish at home against Ohio State on Thursday, while Rutgers gears up to face No. 2, Purdue, also on Thursday confirming their next challenges.
