Philly residents struggling with multiple bills have a reprieve when it comes to their water expenses, as the City of Philadelphia has introduced discounts for seniors and low-income households. The city aims to lighten the load for those feeling the pinch, offering a financial cushion that could, in some cases, go as far as to scrub away existing debts.
Seniors aged 65 and older are eligible for a 25% slash in their water bill rates, provided they reside at the application address, and have a water bill registered in their name. It's important, however, that their yearly income does not overshoot the $38,800 threshold. But even households that don't fall into these categories could snag a discount if they've recently hit a rough patch, like a job loss.
According to the city's official website, the Tiered Assistance Program (TAP), targets low-income residents with unmanageable water bills and offers a path to making them more affordable. TAP has the unique perk of obliterating all accrued debts once a participant completes 24 on-schedule payments.
"The best part? When we forgive your debt, we wipe out all existing charges on your account before joining TAP," the city's website states. All penalties, and principal are included in the debt forgiveness. Customers taking part in TAP can breathe easier knowing that after 24 payments, any remaining past balance evaporates, leaving a clean slate.
Even those uncertain of their eligibility are encouraged to apply for the aid. In the instance of a denied application, the city provides alternative flexible payment plans to help settle remaining debts. The application process is straightforward, with online submissions being touted as the quickest and most convenient method.
