A tragic shooting in South Philadelphia has left a 31-year-old woman dead, with two men now in the hands of police, CBS News Philadelphia reports. The incident, which occurred Tuesday night on the 2300 block of South Marshall Street before 7 p.m., was first detected by patrolling officers who heard gunshots. On their arrival, they found the victim with a fatal gunshot wound to the head.
Chief Inspector Scott Small informed that the woman was transported to Jefferson University Hospital, where, she was pronounced dead a few minutes later. Spent shell casings at the scene suggest that the shooting happened at close range. Fox 29 News also reported that the woman had been previously assaulted last week, an incident requiring hospitalization that left her with facial bruises.
According to police, video footage captured two men fleeing west on Ritner Street from Marshall Street, entering a property and exiting shortly after. Following a brief pursuit on foot, police apprehended the suspects, recovering two semi-automatic handguns in the process. Inspector Small stated that the woman's earlier assault led to the issuing of a warrant for a man who is believed to be one of the individuals currently in custody.
6ABC Philadelphia notes that the shooting may have been domestic in nature; however, details on how the second suspect is linked to the woman have not been elucidated. No names of the victim or the suspects have been released as the investigation continues into the exact motivations behind the incident and the history between the parties involved.
