After nearly a year of sprucing up and laying down some fresh sod, the Port of San Diego has declared the recreational field at Cesar Chavez Park open for business once again. This local hotspot for leisure, located on the San Diego Bay waterfront, is back and ready for the community's picnics, games, and whatever else they've got up their sleeves.

With the turf at this popular field showing some serious signs of defeat, the Port launched into action, fixing up a spot woven into the fabric of the Barrio Logan community. According to an announcement on the Port of San Diego's official website, this wasn't just a slapdash job, they went all in, removing and replacing a hefty 90,000 square feet of grass, and tuning up the drainage and irrigation systems to make sure it stays greener on this side for a good while.

Vice Chair Danielle Moore, one of the trio of San Diego appointees on the Port of San Diego Board of Port Commissioners, didn't miss a beat in expressing just how critical Cesar Chavez Park is to the local neighborhood. "Cesar Chavez Park is a beloved community gem, and we want to ensure it continues to be a fun and safe gathering spot for decades to come," she said, as per the statement obtained by the Port of San Diego. The Port wants the locals to know they're in it for the long haul.

Despite the field taking an intermission starting March 2023, the park and its public viewing pier stayed in the game, open to park-goers throughout the construction phase. Between the kids' playground, picnic areas, and public artworks, there's been plenty to keep visitors busy while the field got back on its feet, and with the wrap-up of this project, visitors can add kicking around a soccer ball or tossing a frisbee back to the mix.
