The Rice Synthetic Biology Institute, led by professor Caroline Ajo-Franklin, has emerged as a hub for futuristic exploration in an interdisciplinary discipline that challenges researchers to redesign living organisms. Issued with $1 million per year in seed funding for five years, the institute's ambitious mission includes myriad applications in medicine, manufacturing, and environmental sustainability. This leap forward follows the university's strategic initiatives started in 2018 to propel faculty and programs in the synthetic biology sphere, as reported by Rice University's news release.

Initial focus areas range from creating living materials that can self-replicate and self-repair to developing cells into living therapeutics for disease detection and prevention. It doesn't stop there; the institute is also diving into the creation of living electronics – a fusion of biology with technology. The overarching themes pivot on leveraging Rice's distinct strengths, all the while considering the ethical, legal, and social implications that come along with groundbreaking synthetic biology research.

Ajo-Franklin said to Rice University's news release, "Connecting that deep expertise through this institute will lead to better science and more innovation." These advances highlight Rice's attempt to solidify its standing in the increasingly competitive field of graduate research and education.
