A house fire in Royal Oak has tragically claimed the lives of three pets and displaced a local family, officials reported. The blaze, which erupted late Friday night, was battled by the Royal Oak Fire Department after receiving a call around 10 p.m. Firefighters arrived at a scene of heavy flames and smoke billowing from the rear of the residence, as per FOX 2 Detroit.

While the human occupants managed to flee the fire without injury, their three cats were not as fortunate and succumbed to the flames. WWJ Newsradio 950 notes that the firefighters, arriving on the scene, found the residents had escaped their burning home, which was soon to become an unfortunate tomb for the feline members of the family.

The homeowner, James Clark, a man amidst a fight against cancer, courageously rescued his 76-year-old mother who was unable to walk on her own. This act of bravery was reported to ClickOnDetroit, with Clark stating, "My mom was lighting a candle and just a spark flew." Clark attempted to return for the cats but was thwarted by the intense black smoke. "The smoke was so black, and it instantly hit me and I knew they were gone," Clark told the outlet.

Dogged by cancer since 2020, Clark bemoaned the consecutive troubles marred by high medical expenses, which ultimately led to the lapse in house insurance. "Cancer is expensive and all the treatment and my mom and all of her problems. It’s been a whirlwind. These five years, they’ve been hell, and this caps it off," Clark shared in a heart-wrenching account to ClickOnDetroit. A GoFundMe has been set up in support of Clark and his mother as they face the aftermath of this disaster, with their home declared a complete loss due to smoke and fire damage.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation. Meanwhile, the local community has come together, showcasing their support for Clark and his mother amidst this misfortune. Details concerning the fire and ongoing investigation are yet to unfold.
