Royston's tight-knit community reels after a devastating fire consumed the much-loved Dill's Food City, a local grocery store that has served the town for nearly eight decades. Flames tore through the establishment on Cooks Street shortly after midnight on Feb. 17, leaving nothing but charred remains and a legacy of community service. According to the city of Royston's Facebook page, the blaze was a "total loss," wiping out a landmark that not only provided groceries but also stood as a meeting spot stitching together the fabric of daily life for many in this small town.
Efforts to douse the inferno were a joint operation, requiring the mobilization of multiple counties and city resources, and though the store itself couldn't be saved, vigilant firefighters successfully shielded adjacent buildings from the fire's wrath, Royston Mayor Kieth Turman expressed his sorrow in an online post stating "My heart aches with pain for this horrific loss for the Dilworth family, its employees, and our community," he further requested community prayers, as 11Alive reported.
The family-owned grocery, which also operates another store in Lavonia, has turned to the outpouring of support they've received from residents as they navigate through this distressing time, the Dilworth Family issuing a statement on Facebook, saying "While we are heartbroken, we are focusing on how lucky we are that no one was injured," and urging their customers to support their surviving location in Lavonia which is just a 20-minute drive away, according to FOX 5 Atlanta.
Rallying in the face of adversity, Royston Fire Chief Matt Elrod, who is among many locals who have been employed by the store over the years, lauded the store's community involvement especially in sports and local organizations—one firefighter was treated for smoke inhalation, but fortunately, there were no additional injuries. The cause of the fire is still undetermined but indeed the incident has seared itself into the community's collective memory as a poignant reminder of how quickly a cornerstone of the neighborhood can be reduced to embers and yet through its loss, the bonds of a community are often revealed in their earnest, this tragedy pulling together the townspeople in shared longing for what was and what might be again.
