City slickers hoping for a break from feeding the meter on Presidents' Day might be in for a surprise if they're cruising for parking in Seattle's buzzing Uptown neighborhood. The area, bolstered by the crowd-pulling Climate Pledge Arena, isn't playing by the usual holiday rules – special event parking rates will still be in effect today to cope with the overflow expected from an event expected to draw a hefty crowd, so says the City of Seattle.
While most city offices take a pause in honor of past commanders-in-chief, officials remind us that parking meters don't always get the day off. The parking premiums, specifically implemented near the Arena on days when over 10,000 attendees are anticipated, are part of a strategy to keep the streets navigable. According to a Seattle Government statement, this is to "help people going to nearby homes and businesses find parking spaces." But relax, if your Presidents' Day plans don't involve a mass event, on-street parking still won't cost a dime outside these bustling zones.
Drivers, mark your calendars or set a reminder because, outside of special events, Seattle does offer free parking days. They include all Sundays, New Year's Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Memorial Day, Juneteenth, Independence Day, Labor Day, Indigenous Peoples' Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas Day. And if any of these holidays fall on a Sunday? The free parking goodness spills over to the following Monday.
So whether you're heading to a concert, catching a game at the Arena, or just out to soak up the Uptown vibe, be savvy about your parking game plan. As for the rest of the city, the free parking days are [enforced] throughout, offering a little respite for your wallet and a chance to relish in the civic spirit without the ticking meter. And remember, special event days and parking rates specific to the Arena can be found on the city's official website listed above.
