Minnesota's working-class residents could be getting a leg up in the housing market, thanks to a new push by Senator Liz Boldon. She announced on Wednesday a nearly $40 million initiative to boost the availability of workforce housing in Greater Minnesota, a significant increase compared to past funding efforts.
The move is a response to the housing pinch that's been cramping the style of local businesses, which are finding it tough to attract employees due to a lack of decent, affordable lodgings. "In Greater Minnesota, businesses struggle to recruit workers due to inadequate housing stock," Senator Boldon, who is Vice Chair of the Senate Housing and Homelessness Prevention Committee, said during the announcement. With applications open until April 30th, 2024, interested parties are directed to the Minnesota Housing's website for more info on how to throw their hat in the ring.
The state's newfound focus on addressing the workforce housing shortage is not just a matter of putting roofs over heads; it's a critical step toward injecting some much-needed vitality into small-town economies. All this cash being funneled into housing is part of a larger effort that was outlined during the last legislative session and reinforced throughout a statewide housing tour by the committee.
According to the Senate DFL website, Boldon emphasized the program's previous successes and hinted at its potential to unlock economic growth for communities that are thirsting for it. "These funds – along with other housing investments from the 2023 session – will help address these challenges, build on the program’s past success, and support economic growth and prosperity for communities across Minnesota," Senator Boldon said. It's clear that when workers have a stable place to call home, the entire community can start plotting a course toward a more prosperous future.
