An elderly San Antonio man with a cognitive impairment who was reported missing yesterday afternoon, has been the subject of a city-wide search after a Silver Alert was issued. The alert, however, was called off shortly before 10 p.m. the same day, the Texas Department of Public Safety said.
Merlin Armitage, 94, was last seen around 1 p.m. at 4438 N. Loop 1604 E on the city's Northeast side, according to FOX San Antonio. The nonagenarian, is approximately 160 pounds, stands 5'9" tall, and has hazel eyes and white hair.
Law enforcement officials believe Armitage's disappearance posed a credible threat to his own health and safety, a concern highlighted by the San Antonio Police Department. Given the seriousness of his cognitive impairment, the community's awareness and assistance were deemed crucial in ensuring Armitage's safe return.
He was last seen driving a white 2015 Toyota Prius, with license plate "GBH0138," an important detail for the public to help identify the vehicle, as noted by KSAT. Despite the discontinuation of the Silver Alert; authorities continue to encourage anyone with information on Armitage's whereabouts, to contact the San Antonio Police Department at 210-207-7579.
The urgency of Silver Alerts such as this one reflect a broader societal concern for the well-being of our elders, especially those made vulnerable by health issues. As Armitage's example underscores, these alerts serve as a crucial beacon; a call to action for communities to rally and safeguard those who can no longer safeguard themselves. With the alert discontinued, the hope is that Merlin Armitage has been found safe or will be soon with the help and vigilance of the public.
