Two Smyrna police officers are on the mend after a harrowing experience that landed them in the hospital, courtesy of a man who allegedly handed them poisoned paperwork. Fox5 Atlanta reported that on Tuesday after a man identified as Little Stone III entered Smyrna Police headquarters, handed over pieces of paper to officers, and then absconded, the officers began experiencing a slew of alarming symptoms five minutes later.
According to arrest records, the suspect waltzed into the station under the guise of wanting to pass along documents to the police chief. Officers S. Smith and D. Jones, who entertained Stone's request, were soon ailing, struggling with "respiratory distress and extreme fatigue," as stated in Fox5 Atlanta's coverage. Immediate hospitalization followed, with the duo suffering from an array of symptoms including chest pain and dizziness.
Stone's motives remain under wraps, but he now faces serious charges for his actions. Specifically, he has been charged with two counts of aggravated assault on police officers. Atlanta News First revealed that Stone was apprehended on the day of the incident and as of now is being held without bond at the Cobb County Jail.
The testing of the mysterious documents has been taken up by the FBI, according to Atlanta News First. Meanwhile, the Smyrna community grapples with the shock of such a bold attack within the walls of its police headquarters. Tony Magee, a local, expressed his dismay, telling Atlanta News First, “They’re here to protect and serve and for someone to have the confidence to come into a building like that and still do it, is devastating,”
The nature of the substance and the results of the FBI investigation are yet to be disclosed. Smyrna police declined to provide commentary on this unfolding narrative. However, both officers have been released from the hospital and are reportedly making a satisfactory recovery.
