San Antonio Spurs' rising star Jeremy Sochan is making his mark both on and off the court. The 20-year-old power forward recently purchased a loft-style condo in the King William historic neighborhood for a sum hovering around the $1.35 million asking price, according to the San Antonio Express-News. The 2,923-square-foot abode boasts high ceilings fitting for the 6-foot-8-inch NBA player, pine flooring and an open kitchen replete with the latest appliances. While many 20-somethings are just getting their feet wet in adulthood, Sochan is setting down some luxe roots.
Meanwhile, Sochan, who has been a "mainstay" for the Spurs this season, isn't just settling in off the court, but also taking on unexpected roles in Gregg Popovich's grand basketball experiment. Popovich, known for his innovative coaching strategies, has slated Sochan as the starting point guard—a position shift that raised eyebrows across NBA coaching circles, reports The Athletic. This role is usually reserved for a different player profile, and thus, has been met with curiosity surrounding its longevity and effectiveness.
This coaching pivot isn't unfounded, considering Sochan's stature and skill set. His agility and size make for a unique match-up conundrum for opposing teams, which is likely a large part of Popovich's reasoning for the switch. Taylor Jenkins, Memphis Grizzlies coach and former Spurs staff member, wasn't taken aback by the bold move. "Others knew better than to be even mildly surprised" when they heard about Popovich's decision, Jenkins stated. His stint with the Spurs' organization, in various roles including head coach of the Austin Spurs, gives him insights into the storied coach's unorthodox methods.
Details about Sochan's recently acquired property include original exposed beams, top-notch sound and video equipment, and a rooftop terrace perfect for a man of his stature – and, it comes with a hefty property tax bill that exceeded $20,000 in 2023. However, financial burdens seem inconsequential when weighed against the prospect of reshaping Spurs' play with Sochan at point guard. After all, in Popovich’s world, reshaping the mold is just part of the playbook.
