The NBA All-Star weekend didn't quite pan out for rookie sensation Victor Wembanyama, who, along with Team Top Picks, failed to snag any accolades at the Skills Challenge. Wembanyama, the towering prodigy for the San Antonio Spurs, joined forces with previous No. 1 selections Paolo Banchero and Anthony Edwards but fell flat, as relayed by KENS 5. Each series of events left them scoreless, a disappointing show for the hype that trailed the French phenom into his first All-Star appearance.
Despite notching the best time for Team Top Picks in the relay with 23.8 seconds, only missing one corner three, Wembanyama couldn't hoist his team to victory. Edwards made some waves by going left-handed on his corner threes, playfully trolling but effectively ending any hope to beat the clock. Pounding The Rock reported that the fun and games didn’t translate to a win, though, as their combined efforts couldn't keep pace.
The title eventually went to Team Pacers, comprised of Tyrese Haliburton, Myles Turner, and Bennedict Mathurin. The trio excelled in the opening rounds which featured an obstacle course and passing challenge, and later broke a tie with Team All-Stars to clinch the championship. Wembanyama and his crew were edged out early, leaving the hardwood heavyweights without a win to boast from the star-studded weekend.
Leaving All-Star festivities with nothing to show for the highly anticipated extravaganza, Wembanyama's outing ends on a lackluster note, as did for Jeremy Sochan after winning the Rising Stars Game with Team Jalen, according to KENS 5. With this as but a blip on what is hoped to be a storied career, the 7'2" center will look to the second half of the NBA season to prove why he was 2023's top pick. And if history has taught us anything, it's that the greats use setbacks as fuel. San Antonians and Spurs fans will be waiting with bated breath to see how their rising star responds.
