A hotel parking lot in South Austin became a crime scene early Thursday morning after a man was fatally shot, the Austin Police Department reported. Officers responded to a distress call past midnight from the Super 8 on Interstate 35 near State Highway 71, arriving at gunfire that left one man dead and another in cuffs.
According to KVUE, the incident began when a 911 caller indicated that two men with guns were seen at the hotel, just after the police made their presence known a gunshot rang out. Officers found the victim and the suspect in the parking lot, a weapon near the detained man, following the grim discovery officers attempted first aid but the victim was declared dead at the scene.
While the nature of the relationship between the suspect and the victim remains unclear, officials emphasized the shooting appeared to be an isolated event, eliminating any larger threat to the community. The suspect, now in police custody, was arrested without a struggle, and a gun was found and seized at the site of the shooting.
CBS Austin reported that homicide detectives are currently piecing together the moments that led to the tragedy, details, however, remain scant as the Austin Police Department has yet to release comprehensive information on the shooting.
