In a move to step up border security measures, Texas Governor Greg Abbott has announced the construction of a Forward Operating Base in Eagle Pass, aiming to bolster the Lone Star State's response to what he describes as President Biden's border crisis, reported by the Texas Governor's Office. The facility, intended for the housing and operations of the Texas National Guard, marks yet another assertive action by Abbott to gain control over immigration issues traditionally managed by federal agencies.

During a recent press conference held in the border town, Abbott, flanked by Major General Thomas Suelzer and Texas Border Czar Mike Banks, laid out his plan for the new base which would house 1,800 soldiers in individual rooms, and additionally, can surge to accommodate 500 more if the Texas Tactical Border Force needs to be deployed there, the Governor's Office conveyed. The forward base is poised to serve as a logistical hub, ensuring that soldiers are no longer scattered across the region or housed in cramped quarters, and comes as part of Texas's multi-billion-dollar commitment to border security.

Major General Suelzer emphasized the capacity expansion at the forthcoming base, mentioning plans to extend operations north and south of Eagle Pass along with additional barriers, three fan boats, and an enhanced drone radar truck program, as per Governor Abbott's directive. Suezler is quoted stating, "In the coming weeks, we will also be expanding operations north and south of Eagle Pass, putting up additional barriers to fortify our border."

Meanwhile, Texas Border Czar Banks lauded the improved conditions that the Forward Operating Base Eagle will provide for the National Guard soldiers; emphasizing that this increase in resources, and better living conditions, are directly reducing illegal crossings in Texas. "The key thing I want you to take away from this is that we are providing a better quality of life for our Texas National Guard soldiers," Banks stated, attributing the reported decrease in numbers to the soldiers' diligent efforts and Governor Abbott's leadership.

Beyond the construction of the base, the Texas Military Department has procured 80 acres of land in the area to erect the facility which will feature numerous amenities including a 700-seat dining hall, a recreation area, laundry services, WiFi, chaplaincy, and health care facilities. These developments are part of a broader campaign by Governor Abbott to crack down on illegal immigration and criminal activities along the Texas border, which includes designating Mexican drug cartels as terrorist organizations and taking legal actions to safeguard Texan communities.
