In the heat of the race for the Democratic nomination for U.S. Senate in Texas, both contenders, Congressman Colin Allred and state Senator Roland Gutierrez, have declared their support for President Joe Biden amid criticisms over his mental acuity and federal border policy.
Special counsel findings have painted Biden as a "well-meaning, elderly man with a poor memory," yet both candidates expressed confidence in the President's leadership, with Allred asserting in an interview with CBS Austin, "I can tell you, he's mentally fully sharp and fully in charge of everything," and Gutierrez bolstering Biden by noting his legislative success, claiming "The President's most successful president of the last four, legislatively," according to CBS Austin.
However, support for Biden doesn't blanket their stance on policy, particularly concerning border security, an issue where Allred and Gutierrez's paths diverge. Allred openly criticized the Biden Administration's approach, joining a group of Democrats and Republicans in a vote against the administration's existing border strategies, justifying his decision, "Do you stand for the status quo and think it's acceptable, or do you not," as reported by CBS Austin.
Despite these differences, both Allred and Gutierrez emphasize their alliance with Biden, a Democratic solidarity that reflects the complexities of party unity in the face of divisive policies and the challenging narrative surrounding the President's capacity for office, both candidates reiterated their support for the President despite the lenses of scrutiny his administration continues to encounter, as per madkisonews.
