In a tragic event that took a toddler's life, three Portuguese women are now in the grip of the law, charged with the grave responsibility of child endangerment. The trio, between the ages of 22 and 32, was nabbed by the ERO in Pawtucket, Rhode Island, on February 17 after accusations swirled about their alleged negligence, leading to a 1-year-old’s demise. An infant lost in the maelstrom of adult recklessness – this is the story that unfolded under their care.
Details continue to emerge as Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) Boston’s operatives took the three foreign nationals into custody. According to ICE, the demise of the innocent has brought grief and a stern reminder from ERO Boston Field Office Director Todd M. Lyons declaring, “The alleged crimes of these unlawfully present individuals resulted in the death of an innocent child. Those who commit crimes against children must be held accountable.” Escaping justice is not an option on behalf of these individuals, for a danger posed by them to the New England communities does not go unseen by authorities.
Previously, the Pawtucket Police apprehended the women on February 11, following a grim discovery. They had responded to a distress call only to uncover a young life cut short, a boy bruised and beyond help. Along with the trio, a man alleged to be the father also found himself encircled by the law's firm embrace, charged with manslaughter among other distressing accusations of child abuse.
The callous thread of this sordid tale follows back more than two decades, with one of the arrested women having overstayed her United States visit by over a quarter of a century – her companions, too, having lingered beyond the twilight of their waivers' grace period. After their arraignment, the women managed to slip the confines of the court on bail, while the child’s ostensible father remained remanded, entangled in the correctional system of Cranston, Rhode Island.
To continue their task of safeguarding our nation's threshold, members of the public are encouraged to remain vigilant. Reports of crimes and any suspicious activities are welcomed by ERO and can be disclosed by making a call to 866-347-2423 or by filling out the online tip form made available.
