A near-century-old fixture in Michigan's industrial landscape, the Trenton Channel Power Plant, is set for a two-phase demolition after being decommissioned by DTE Energy in 2022. According to Fox 2 Detroit, the plant has been a significant part of the local economy and national military efforts spanning pre and post World War II.

The smokestacks, a notable part of the Trenton skyline, are scheduled for implosion on March 1, with the boiler house following on May 17, Fox 2 Detroit reports. DTE has projected the transitions to last under a minute each, causing minimal disturbance — similar to "a short series of loud noises similar to thunder."

DTE's preparations for the demolition are aimed at keeping the impact on residents and the environment to a minimum, as detailed on the energy company's website. A city announcement also assured that hazardous materials have been properly managed, with additional safety measures such as air and seismic monitoring to be implemented.

Community members will have an opportunity to learn more about the demolition process during a virtual town hall meeting hosted by DTE on February 22, 6 p.m., which was shared by The News-Herald. DTE officials have promised steps to mitigate dust and disruption, and no major road closures are expected during the event except, for brief pauses on Grosse Ile Parkway and West Jefferson Avenue.

To assuage environmental concerns, water misters and cleanup crews will be on-site to manage dust levels throughout the demolition, per DTE's commitments. Locals can stay informed about the schedule and any adjustments that may arise from weather conditions through updates provided by the energy company and its dedicated community communication channels.
