Chaos erupted in Gainesville Tuesday night as two teenagers sustained gunshot wounds in the aftermath of a street brawl, local authorities said. The Gainesville Police Department responded to a call around 9 p.m., directing officers to the 600 block of Central Avenue where an altercation among several juveniles escalated into gunfire, Atlanta News First reports.
The violent encounter resulted in two 13-year-olds being shot in the legs, with both victims subsequently hospitalized and reported to be in stable condition, however, the gunmen remain unidentified, and investigators are peeling through the scant evidence left behind as most individuals fled the scene before law enforcement's arrival, evidence of the chaotic nature of the confrontation and the state of the block post-shooting. According to an 11Alive report, the exact number of individuals involved is yet to be determined.
Minors acquiring firearms is of particular concern for the police department, with reported instances where guns are taken from unattended vehicles.
