A hit-and-run incident has left a 10-year-old in recovery after being struck by a vehicle near Ricardo Salinas Elementary School in Universal City, just northeast of San Antonio. The boy was on his way to school Thursday when the incident occurred, and the driver involved allegedly fled the scene without providing necessary aid, according to local authorities and a report by KENS 5.
The driver, reported to be a woman in a white SUV, had just dropped off children at the same school. Witnesses were only able to provide a partial license plate number to the police. The mother of the injured child has called for the public's assistance to bring forward additional eye-witnesses, hoping they may help identify the driver responsible, KENS 5 reported.
The mother describes the routine her two sons follow every morning, biking to school with cell phones at the ready to communicate with their parents. The tragic event unfolded over the phone, with her younger son relaying in real-time the horrifying scene of his brother carrying a damaged bike, unable to ride it after being hit, as reported by KENS 5.
The boy was subsequently assisted by other parents and was seen at a local hospital for internal bruising around his ribs. His mother expressed deep concern for the safety of all children, stating, "If she's willing to flee, not to take any personal responsibility for injuring a child, how can we feel safe that it won't happen again to any of, our children?" as told to KENS 5.
After the incident, authorities including the Universal City Police and Judson ISD Police have been working on the case. While filming at the school, a woman claiming to be an employee mentioned the driver had been located. However, Johnny Siemens, the Police Chief of Universal City, stated that his department has not received any such information. Judson ISD has yet to provide confirmation, leaving the investigation ongoing and the community in want of justice and closure.
