
Gunfire disrupted the Long Beach community in a series of violent incidents over the weekend, leaving one man fighting for his life and another wounded. The Long Beach Police Department responded to a shooting early Sunday morning on the 5300 block of E. 2nd Street. The victim, a male adult, suffered a life-threatening gunshot wound to his upper body following a verbal dispute with an unidentified group, according to the police. Officers arrived at the scene around 12:58 a.m., and the Long Beach Fire Department swiftly transported the victim to the hospital. The altercation that led to the shooting began with a war of words which tragically managed to escalate, ending in the suspect revealing a firearm and shooting the victim before fleeing undetected.
Another shooting occurred on Saturday night in the 1500 block of Seabright Avenue. Dispatched at approximately 9:28 p.m., officers found a male adult with a non-life-threatening gunshot wound. The skirmish stemmed from a verbal altercation that devolved into a physical fight, during which the suspect produced a firearm and shot the victim. In the wake of the gunfire, the suspect made a quick escape. Paramedics arrived and took the victim to a local hospital for treatment. Long Beach authorities are still piecing together this violent encounter, with the suspect at large.
In a separate event that same day, around 6:47 p.m., residents of 20th Street and Pine Avenue were startled by the sound of a gunshot. Police arrived to find a man who thankfully was unharmed. He reported that after a brief exchange of words, the suspect brandished a firearm and fired a shot into the air. The suspect fled shortly thereafter. Officers are currently investigating what has been deemed as a negligent discharge, with no injuries fortunately coming to pass.
The motivations behind these events remain under investigation, as Long Beach detectives actively seek to uncover the identities of the suspects involved. This string of violent incidents has surely unsettled the community and called to attention the precarious nature of public safety.
