Two Ypsilanti men were arrested and a trove of narcotics and firearms was seized from a child's bedroom following a police chase that began on a Michigan interstate, per Michigan State Police. A wild pursuit on Jan. 31 involving the Livingston and Washtenaw Narcotics Enforcement Team (LAWNET) led to the apprehension of the suspects, ages 28 and 32, after they fled a traffic stop and later crashed into a garage in Ypsilanti Township.
The chase began when LAWNET detectives tried to stop the vehicle on westbound I-94 near Belleville Road in Van Buren Township, but the suspects sped off, prompting the suspect to flee in his vehicle while a trooper was approaching, said officials. Following the crash, deputies witnessed the two men breaking into a nearby home. With the assistance of a K9 unit, both men, who had outstanding felony warrants, were found hiding in a bedroom of the residence, according to CBS Detroit.
Upon arrival of the homeowner, it was disclosed that she was the mother of one of the suspect’s children. Initially denied entry to search the home, detectives secured a search warrant and uncovered 750 grams of cocaine, 20 grams of crack cocaine, and 6 grams of fentanyl along with two Glock pistols concealed in a dresser in the child's bedroom, detailed MLive.
Further investigation led to a second search at the primary suspect's residence in Sumpter Township, where an additional 1.2 grams of fentanyl, 215 grams of cocaine and a Draco 7.62mm pistol turned up. Both men are currently being held at the Washtenaw County Jail, reported WLNS. The operations involved multiple law enforcement agencies including the Michigan State Police and the Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Office.
LAWNET emphasized the severity of the findings, particularly the dangers posed by having drugs, and firearms accessible to children. The implications of this discovery weigh heavy on a community already grappling with the widespread challenges of narcotics trafficking and gun violence.
