Los Angeles authorities have finally arrested a 19-year-old suspect linked to a deadly hit-and-run that claimed the life of a bicyclist last year. Daniel Antonio Garcia of Panorama City was arrested on charges of felony hit-and-run causing death, the Los Angeles Police Department reported.
The arrest brings closure to a case that has cast a shadow on the community since August 12, 2023. On that fateful night, a black Infiniti sedan barreling down Van Nuys Boulevard hit a cyclist and fled the scene. In a statement obtained by LAPD online, police detailed how the car was driving at unsafe speeds before veering off to overtake another vehicle and striking the cyclist.
The sheer force of the impact sent the victim careening towards a parked car and finally to rest on a sidewalk—lifeless. Witnesses could only watch in horror as the driver sped away, one even claimed that an attempt to follow the suspect resulted in the driver brandishing a gun. The Infiniti, recognized as a Q50 with significant right front fender damage, was last seen disappearing into the night along Van Nuys Boulevard.
Emergency services arriving at the scene could do little but pronounce the unidentified Hispanic male, estimated to be between 40 and 50 years old, deceased. While the victim's name remains withheld pending notification of next of kin, the community hopes that this arrest might commence a journey toward justice. The City of Los Angeles offers up to a $50,000 reward for information leading to the apprehension and conviction of hit-and-run offenders.
Detective Otrosina and Officer Garcia of the Valley Traffic Division, who are in charge of the investigation, encourage anyone with additional information to step forward. Tipsters may contact them directly or choose to stay anonymous by reaching out to LA Regional Crime Stoppers, highlighting the city's ongoing commitment to curtail the hit-and-run epidemic terrorizing its streets.
